
The Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) recently hosted its maiden Social Work Day, a groundbreaking event that showcased the commitment to promoting social work and community development. It also marked a significant milestone in the Hospital’s commitment to holistic healthcare delivery.
The Chief Medical Director, Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Samuel A. Adegoke welcomed everyone to the programme and commended the Social Work Unit of the hospital for coming up with such event which was aimed at showcasing the activities of the unit.
The Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee of the Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Yetunde T. Olasinde welcomed the guest lecturer and commended the Head, Social Work Unit, Olaoluwajubelo Tella for coming up with such a laudable programme.
The highlight of the occasion was the keynote lecture that was delivered by Dr. Kayode Anthony Ogedengbe, President of the Association of Medical Social Workers of Nigeria. (AMSWON). Dr. Ogedengbe’s thought provoking presentation on “The Roles of Medical Social Workers in Management of Patients’’ shed light on the critical contributions of social workers in the healthcare sector. His insights emphasized on the importance of social work in addressing the psychosocial needs of patients, enhancing their overall well-being and recovery. He emphasized that a social work department is a desideratum for the success of any Hospital.
During the event, guests were enlightened about the history of Social Work Day, which was celebrated in March 2025. This tradition, dating back 68years, originated in England by Lady Almoner and was later introduced in Nigeria by the late Mrs. Omitiwoju in 1957 at the University College Hospital, (UCH) Ibadan. This rich history underscores the significance of social work in healthcare and highlights the department’s commitment to upholding these values.
In recognition of Dr. Ogedengbe’s esteemed contribution, the Head of Nursing Services Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Mrs. Christy A. Alagbe presented a plaque to the guest lecturer on behalf of the Hospital. This gesture is in appreciation of Dr. Ogedengbe’s leadership and dedication to advancing social work practice in Nigeria.
The Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Olufemi O. Oyewusi delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Dr. Kayode. O. Ogedengbe for his thoughtful, well researched and engaging lecture. He also commended the organizers and participants for the rapt attention given to the programme. This underscores the event’s success and the commitment of the hospital to future collaborations and initiatives.
